‘Are You OK, Bro?’ with Singapore Association for Mental Health

Lepak Conversations held a first-ever panel event that unravelled Malay men’s mental health in collaboration with Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH).

Based on the 2022 National Population Health Survey that states how Malay male (17.5%) respondents had the highest proportion of poor mental health, compared with Chinese male (14.9%) respondents and Indian male (12.2%) respondents, the sold-out event saw 41 men and male ally attendees coming together to discuss very personal perspectives on mental health.

With Lepak Conversations’ focus on allyship, the event saw a diverse mix of Malays and non-Malay/Muslims, the latter being curious to learn how to support their Malay peers. The event was covered on CNA938.

Due to a gap in qualitative studies on the experiences of mental health challenges among Malay men in Singapore, we embarked on a study to understand the differences in perception of mental health among Malay men and its impact on help-seeking behaviour.
